How Photodynamic Therapy Works
In cases of wet macular degeneration, abnormal blood vessels can grow under the retina, forming a structure known as the choroidal neovascular membrane (CNVM). These vessels often leak fluid, which damages the surrounding retinal tissue and leads to vision loss. Photodynamic therapy directly addresses this issue by blocking the leakage and slowing the growth of these abnormal vessels.
During the PDT procedure, our ophthalmologist will inject a light-sensitive dye into the affected area to target the CNVM specifically. Once the dye has reached these abnormal blood vessels, we use a narrow-wavelength laser beam to activate it. This laser treatment takes about 3 minutes and allows the dye to absorb the laser energy, forming tiny blood clots that seal off the leaking vessels. By halting the leakage and controlling abnormal blood vessel growth, PDT helps reduce the damage caused by wet macular degeneration and supports long-term vision stability.
The procedure is non-invasive and rarely requires anesthesia, ensuring you remain comfortable throughout. After the procedure, it’s essential to avoid direct sunlight and bright lights for several days, as the dye remains sensitive to light. Our team will provide detailed post-treatment instructions and guide you on how to manage this period. In most cases, PDT requires several sessions over one to two years for optimal results, allowing us to protect your vision over time effectively.
Conditions Treated with Photodynamic Therapy
Photodynamic therapy is especially effective in managing the following conditions:
Wet Macular Degeneration: PDT targets the abnormal blood vessels that form with wet macular degeneration, slowing their growth and reducing the risk of further vision loss.
Choroidal Neovascular Membrane (CNVM): PDT is a primary treatment for CNVM, allowing us to seal off leaks and stabilize the abnormal blood vessel growth under the retina.
Patients with early stage wet macular degeneration and minimal retinal scarring are often ideal candidates for PDT, as early intervention helps maximize the effectiveness of the treatment. Our team will assess your specific condition to determine if PDT is right for you, and we will work with you to develop a personalized treatment plan that best protects your vision.
Advantages of Photodynamic Therapy
Photodynamic therapy offers several important benefits that make it an effective treatment choice for many patients:
Photodynamic therapy is a valuable, non-invasive option for treating the underlying causes of wet macular degeneration, supporting sustained eye health, and preventing additional vision loss.
